Sotaan lähdössä: Everstiluutnantti Mannerheim, kapteeni v. Steven, eversti Meissner, amiraali Greve

The Russo-Japanese war was fought on the territories of Korea and Mantchuria during the years 1904-1905. The Russian army and navy were incapable of effective warfare on the distant battlefields, which gave rise to internal restlesness in Russia. The war, ending in defeat, had far-reaching consequences to Russia and also to Finland, where the first parliamentary reform was on its way, and the first period of Russian oppression coming to an end.
Mannerheim’s participation in the Russo-Japanese War took place from 10 November,1904, till 4 June,1906. He assisted the Commander of the Nezhinski Dragoon Regiment participating in the battles of Sandepu, Inkou and Mukden. By the commander of the 3. Mantchurian army, he was awarded 2nd class decorations of the Orders of Stanislai and Anna, and 4th class decoration of the Order of Vladimir, Commander-in-Chief of the land and naval forces fighting against Japan. For his merits in the battles, he was promoted colonel by the Emperor on the 29th of November 1905.
